Píše se rok 1920 a Irsko prožívá dramatické okamžiky přerodu ostrova na svobodnou a nezávislou zemi. Irové jsou hrdým národem, který si nade vše váží klasických mravních hodnot a víry v Boha. Stejně tak ale dokáží téměř vše obětovat pocitu svobody a národní svrchovanosti. Anglický romanopisec Wilkie Collins bývá literárními kritiky označován spolu s E. A. Poem a Emilem Gaboriauem za zakladatele žánru detektivního románu. Jeho nejznámější román Měsíční kámen prohlásil básník T. S. Eliot za nejlepší detektivku všech dob. A v tom názoru ho podpořili i jiní. Jisté je, že Collins sám ani netušil, že nějaké detektivky píše. Ve své době patřil k vyhledávaným a velmi populárním autorům tzv. senzačního románu vyrůstajícího z tradic realismu a okořeněného výběrem kriminálních událostí ze současnosti a nevázanou společenskou kritikou. Collinsův styl má proto hodně společného s Charlesem Dickensem, s nímž ho pojilo dlouholeté přátelství. Dickens ochotnicky hrál úlohy v Collinsových dramatech. Podnikali spolu cesty do zahraničí a napsali společně knihu. Složitý děj nás zavádí do viktoriánské Anglie. Jednak ho tvoří milostný příběh bohaté dívky Laury a mladého učitele kreslení Waltera, základní osou je však zápletka, v níž hraje hlavní roli neuvěřitelná podoba Laury s chudou dívkou Annou. Na záhadu jejich nepochopitelné podoby se nabaluje série dalších nejasností. Zatímco vycházejí najevo staré zločiny, během příběhu dochází k řadě nových a postupně se objevují a rozkrývají stále nové a nové záhady.
