Nezapomíná se zmínit o oddanosti psích duší a jejich lásce k lidskému rodu. Ačkoliv kniha nese v názvu i kočičí pokolení, je především oslavou psích vlastností. Nicméně i kočičí příběhy prozrazují autorův kladný vztah k těmto odvěkým průvodcům nás lidí. Ačkoliv je kniha plná veselých příhod a mírně pobaveného pohledu autora na soužití se psy a kočkami, najdeme v textu i několik rozporuplných a pro dnešní milovníky zvířat nepřijatelných pasáží. Kupírováním uší a ocásků počínaje a topením štěňat konče. Z dnešního pohledu může takové počínání nebo jeho tiché schvalování vrhat na jinak kladný vztah autora ke zvířatům temný stín, ale musíme si uvědomit, že věci, které dnes považujeme za kruté a nepřijatelné byly v době, kdy text této knihy vznikl, běžné.
