Po druhé světové válce se v rámci tzv. první obnovy náboženství objevilo úsilí zachránit z represáliemi sužovaného tibetského buddhismu alespoň základní věci. Ve třicátých letech byly kláštery pobořeny, některé zcela zničeny, mniši vyhnáni, někteří popraveni, část z duchovenstva byla zavřená do gulagu a zbytek se musel vzdát mnišského stavu. V polovině šedesátých let, v období prvních kritik Stalinova kultu vznikla v Ulan-Ude malá, ale významná skupina, buddhistická komunita. Neoficiální, tajná mikro-sangha se formovala pod vedením B. B. Dandarona, burjatského buddhisty a buddhologa a existovala až do jeho uvěznění v roce 1972. Byl odsouzen na pět let nucených prací a ve věku šedesáti let v roce 1947 v pracovním táboře umírá. Jeden z jeho nejpřednějších žáků A. I. Železnov namaloval thangku, věnovanou svému učiteli; jednalo se o mandalu Vadžrabhajravy. Namaloval ji jako inovaci starobylé tradice a thangka tak představuje unikátní zobrazení v rámci burjatské buddhistické tradice, neboť začleňuje i prvky z vnějšího světa. Je až překvapivé jak mnoho lze z thangky vyčíst s využitím religionistického přístupu. Tato metodologie se odlišuje od způsobu, jak obrazu rozumí sami vyznavači rodícího se Dandaronova kultu.

Kapitoly 1–9 charakterizují vývoj rétoriky od jejích řeckých, helénistických a římských počátků k rétorice v kontextu křesťanské kultury středověku, dále k období humanismu, osvícenství, baroka; závěrečné kapitoly se pak věnují rétorice v 18., 19, a 20. století. Přitom se uplatňuje zřetel geografický, zahrnující dějiny rétoriky ve Francii, Španělsku, Itálii, Německu, Anglii, Skotsku, Polsku, v Rusku, v Čechách, na Moravě a na Slovensku, od 19. století pak i ve Spojených státech. Poslední, 10. kapitola předkládá odpověď na otázku, zdali se odpovídající systémy rétorických poznatků utvářely i za hranicemi středomořské antiky. Na vybraných příkladech teoretických prací o „umění řeči“ pocházejících z území Indie, Blízkého východu, Číny, Koreje a Japonska se ukazuje, že každé jazykové společenství si vytváří svou vlastní představu, teorii a praxi přesvědčivého a sugestivního řečového vystupování. Malířová’s “The Sylph” is both diaristic and satirical, while Svobodová’s ironical “A Great Passion”, with its rural setting and folklore motifs, reminds one of the writings of Karel Jaromír Erben. Preissová’s short story may be read as a celebration of folk culture. Benešová’s “Friends” is interesting for its psychological presentation of a child’s point of view and its implicit criticism of anti-Semitism. The book is accompanied by the biographies of each author and an introduction by Kathleen Hayes.

Aspekty zkušenosti jsou zachyceny (nebo pojmenovány) základními jazykovými jednotkami, znaky (slovy i idiomy a rčeními), a tyto znaky jsou seskupeny tak, aby odrážely skutečné nebo vnímané vztahy mezi těmito aspekty zkušenosti. Procesy pojmenování a seskupování jsou vzájemně propojeny, a proto jsou v tomto přístupu syntax a sémantika integrovány. Rastall však nepředkládá pouze sterilní formální analýzy těchto problémů, ale spíše o nich diskutuje a přemýšlí formou eseje. Tento typ argumentace je ve filozofii běžný, a skutečně, mnohé problémy, jimiž se autor zabývá, mají filozofickou povahu. Stručně řečeno, kniha je cenná nejen pro lingvisty (obecně pro syntaktiky a sémantiky, zvláště pro anglisty), ale také pro filozofy. Navazuje na tradici funkční lingvistiky, obohacuje ji o mnoho nových myšlenek a aplikuje ji na nové i staré problémy. Kniha navazuje na autorovu monografii „Bottom-Up Linguistics“, která již dříve vyšla v nakladatelství Munipress.
