Próza Popis jednoho zápasu je prvním Kafkovým rozsáhlejším literárním pokusem, který se dochoval. Je to typ experimentální literatury, avšak ne ve smyslu programového experimentu, jaký známe ze soudobého i pozdějšího modernismu a avantgardy. Autor si tu - chtěje zachytit vnější, ale především svůj vnitřní svět naprosto přesně a autenticky, bez ohledu na literární konvence a vzory - doslova zkoušel, jak, či zda vůbec, dovede vyjádřit to, co vidí, i své nálady, afekty, zážitky, ale také, v neposlední míře, své fantazie a sny. Popis jednoho zápasu dává možnost nahlédnout do počátků procesu, v němž krystalizoval Kafkův specifický, ve 20. století s ničím nesrovnatelný způsob psaní a znázorňování světa. Celý text pozůstává z řady víceméně samostatných úseků bez vzájemné souvislosti, která by ukazovala na nějaký jednotný ideový záměr nebo dějový plán. O psychologické motivaci jednání postav nemůže být řeč, postavy nepředstavují žádné pevně dané charaktery. Ani sám vypravěč v první osobě není uchopitelný jako jednotná instance. V atmosféře textu lze vysledovat zřetelný pocit ohrožení, ale není to spíš nespokojenost sama se sebou, pocit trapnosti z vlastní existence? Zřejmé je, že na takové otázky se Kafka svým textem nesnaží dávat žádné odpovědi; pouze konstatuje jisté stavy, podává "popis". Což platí pro celé vydávané životní dílo. Popis jednoho zápasu je z tohoto hlediska prvním vyjádřením toho, že Kafka přikládal svému "psaní" přímo existenciální závažnost: psaní pro něj byla životní potřeba či nutnost, jediná činnost, jež ho cele naplňovala; takové naplnění mu, jak si postupně uvědomoval, nemohlo poskytnout povolání, manželství, společenské postavení či jiné konstanty života. Účelem (a pro něj samého zdůvodněním) již tohoto raného textu tedy pro něj nebylo napsat kus literatury, nýbrž "popsat", tj. sepsat si z duše všechny možné obavy, nejistoty a nenaplněné potřeby, s nimiž se nedokázal vyrovnat v reálném životě. Kafka tedy nepsal, aby oslovil čtenáře, nýbrž psal takříkajíc pro sebe - a úžasný, dodnes nevysvětlený paradox jeho odkazu je, že tím svým psaním pro sebe oslovil a hluboko zasáhl tolik čtenářů jako málokterý spisovatel 20. století.

V povídkách Ortel i V kárném táboře rezonuje téma soudu a rozsudku. Obě díla patří k několika málo textům, které měly zůstat na Kafkovo přání po jeho smrti zachovány. V tomto svazku vycházejí společně v novém překladu. Rozsáhlá odborná literatura interpretuje povídku Ortel z nejrůznějších zorných úhlů - výklady sahají od prostého konstatování zřejmých paralel mezi životem hlavního hrdiny Georga a Kafkovým (vztah ke snoubence, složitý vztah mezi synem a otcem, resp. mezi jejich světy) přes úvahy o obecné podstatě soudu či rozsudku až po existencialistické náhledy na člověka a společnost. Způsob, jímž Kafka zkoumá lidskou duši a motivace, o které se opírá naše konání, většina studií shodně uvádí do spojitosti s teoriemi Friedricha Nietzscheho a Sigmunda Freuda. Kafkovské téma soudu a rozsudku rezonuje i v povídce V kárném táboře, zde je však dovedeno do hrůzyplné krajnosti. Proceduru mučení svěřil Kafka programovatelnému stroji, zatímco katův úkol spočívá pouze v dohlížení na bezchybný chod mašiny, jejíž kódy nikdo, kromě kata, nezná. Alibismus a odmítání odpovědnosti a viny působí zvláště dnes, kdy roboti vykonávají mnohem složitější práci, jako sotva překonatelný znak nelidskosti. Povídka Ortel (Das Urteil) pochází z roku 1912, povídku V kárném táboře (In der Strafkolonie) napsal Kafka v říjnu 1914. Sám Kafka dospěl k závěru, že by se mohly spolu s povídkou Proměna publikovat pod názvem Tresty (Strafen).
