Temně pochmurná nálada skladby souvisí také se smrtí Smetanovy manželky Kateřiny (19. dubna 1859). Poprvé vyšel Macbeth tiskem až v roce 1912. Skladba se později ujala jako klavírní kus a byla také instrumentována Jarmilem Burghauserem. Nové urtextové vydání vychází z jediného dochovaného pramene, Smetanovy skici tužkou. Editorka do notového textu doplnila jen posuvky a (výjimečně) ligaturové obloučky. Chybějící pauzy a rytmické „nekorektnosti“ jsou ponechány podle autografu.
