Czech Photography of the 20th Century, published simultaneously in Czech and English versions, is the first book to present the main trends, figures, and works of Czech photography from the beginning to the end of the last century to such a large extent. Its 517 plates include not only the most important, well-known photographs and photomontages, but also works that have long been forgotten or are published for the first time. The book is arranged in seventeen chapters, supplemented with chronologies of the most important events in twentieth-century Czech photography and history. E-PHOTO evaluated the book as THE MOST INFLUENTIAL PHOTOGRAPHY SOURCES IN 2010-2011.

Katalog k výstavě představuje dílo tří malířů, Jana Jedličky, Vladivoje Kotyzy a Mikuláše Rachlíka, kteří se setkali na pražské Akademii výtvarných umění v letech 1961- 1968. Tehdy směřovali k fantaskní a groteskní malbě. Odmítali jakékoliv programy. Přesto bylo cosi, co je spojovalo: zájem o fantastické v realitě, které ovšem nemuseli příliš vyhledávat. Svět "vítězného socialismu", v němž žili, jim dával spoustu možností k odhalování grotesky, absurdity a doslova magického v banální realitě. V každodennosti nalézali černý humor i kouzlo nechtěného, ale také skrytou, nezjevenou brutalitu. Jejich obrazy a kresby měly znaky podivné, tragikomické dystopie. V roce 1966 konfrontovali vzniklé práce na improvizované výstavě v jednom prázdném bytě na Újezdě č. 26 na Malé Straně v Praze. Výstava v Galerii města Plzně a katalog k ní ukazuje tvorbu tří umělců z šedesátých let, která od té doby nebyla prakticky vystavena. Tragické události roku 1968 a vstup vojsk SSSR a Varšavské smlouvy do Československa rozdělily cesty tří aktérů výstavy. Náznakem je představena jejich tvorba po roce 1968 až do současnosti.

Vladimír Jindřich Bufka (1887-1916) je neprávem opomíjeným českým fotografem. Byl všestranně nadaným tvůrcem a chemikem. Svého času konkuroval Františku Drtikolovi. Jeho ateliér v pražské Lucerně byl zároveň významným uměleckým salonem. Českou fotografii ovlivňoval od svých 21 let, kdy začal publikovat své fotografie i texty. V jeho vlastním díle se prolíná secesní symbolismus s "naturalismem" momentní fotografie a impresionismem. Mistrně zvládl novou techniku tříbarevného gumotisku, která byla tehdy považována za zvláště vhodnou pro uměleckou fotografii. Technické mistrovství ho vedlo k obtížným motivům (např. noční snímky). S první široce využitelnou technikou barevné fotografie, autochromem, se seznámil přímo u jeho vynálezců, bratří Lumierů v Lyonu. Zemřel ve věku 29 let na leukemii. Autorem monografie je historik fotografie Antonín Dufek.

Fotograf Jan Svoboda (1934-1990) vnímal sochy Zdeňka Palcra (1927-1996) jako autonomní výtvarný motiv. Fotografie těchto soch vznikaly v 60. - 80. letech 20. století primárně jako dokumentace sloužící sochaři, fotograf je však autorsky přetvořil v obrazy specifických výtvarných kvalit a nevšední obrazové hodnoty. Knihu doplňuje popis přátelství i výtvarného a myšlenkového souznění obou autorů (text Jaromíra Zeminy), jejich stručné životopisy a výběrová bibliografie. Kniha zahrnuje unikátní a nově zpřístupněný obrazový materiál.

Jaromír Funke (1896-1945)patřil mezi novátory moderní fotografie, podobně jako Jaroslav Rössler, Man Ray, László Moholy-Nagy, Albert Renger-Patzsch, Alexander Rodčenko, Paul Strand, Edward Weston a další. Podobně jako oni se Funke - roku 1922 - vydal na cestu k abstrakci, která vyústila v jeho vlastním -ismu, "fotogenismu". V průběhu dvacátých let akceptoval jako jeden z prvních také iracionální směry, poetismus a surrealismus. Součástí knihy je Antologie textů Jaromíra Funkeho. Kniha přibližuje především logiku utváření a proměn Funkeho tvorby, zasazuje Funkeho dílo do kontextu evropské avantgardní fotografie a kultury. Velký soubor Sudkových prací - kontaktní kopie a fotografické pigmenty - doplňují tzv. puřidla a veteše, na jejichž originální adjustaci se Sudkem spolupracoval právě Otto Rothmayer a jež jsou dnes ceněny jako nejprogresivnější příspěvek světové fotografii.
