Dick byl jako novorozeně nalezen na ulici v New Yorku a byl vychován majitelem lodi, sanfranciským rejdařem Weldonem, který ho bral jako vlastního. Po neúspěšné výpravě za velrybami do Tichomoří se Poutník pod vedením kapitána Hulla vracel domů do San Francisca. V Aucklandu na Novém Zélandu vzal na palubu paní Weldonovou, manželku majitele lodi, a syna Jacka. Dalšími cestujícími byli černoška Nan, chůva malého Jacka, bratranec Benedikt, vzdálený příbuzný Weldonových a vášnivý entomolog , a Negoro, zamlklý Portugalec a lodní kuchař, o kterém nikdo nic nevěděl. Během plavbu Poutník z nalezeného vraku ještě zachránil pět černochů , mezi nimi siláka Herkula, a také psa Dinga, který od počátku neměl Negora rád. Během další plavby postihla cestující Poutníka velká katastrofa. Celá posádka lodi včetně kapitána Hulla zahynula při lovu na velrybu , která chránila své mládě. Dick jako jediný zbylý námořník je nucen se ujmout velení. Netuší však, že na lodi je přítomen muž, který spřádá intriky. Jedné noci vloží tajně Negoro pod kompas magnet a navigační prostředky tím pádem ukazují nesprávnou polohu i směr plavby. Dick Sand je příliš mladý, aby dokázal spočítat přesnou polohu podle hvězd, a tak loď pluje špatným směrem. Nakonec je loď v hrozné bouři těžce poškozena a cestující ztroskotají u neznámého břehu. Mělo by to být pobřeží Ameriky, ale hned od počátku cesty do vnitrozemí je něco špatně...

Plující město je román s autobiografickým nádechem a je vyprávěn v první osobě. Je samozřejmě také součástí autorovy série Podivuhodná putování. Součástí tohoto svazku je i novela Prorazili blokádu. Mísí se v něm autorovy skutečné zážitky s fikcí. K napsání románu ho inspirovala společná plavba s bratrem Paulem na do té doby největším parníku světa Great Eastern z Liverpoolu do New Yorku v roce 1867. Všechno svědčí o tom, že Verne byl lodí nadšen, přestože líčí i celou řadu drobných nehod a neštěstí plynoucích z ne zcela zvládnuté technologie výroby tak obrovského námořního kolosu (výtlak 18 915 tun, délka 210 metrů, šířka 25 metrů, počet cestujících 2996). Verne v lodi vidí vítězství lidského génia a pro její vybavenost a rozměry ji nazval plujícím městem. Autor do popisu lodi a svých zážitků z USA vložil drobný, ale dramatický milostný příběh ženy, která zešílí, když zjistí, že na palubě lodi je jak muž, kterého opravdu miluje, tak i její manžel, kterého nenávidí, a mezi oběma muži dojde k tragickému střetnutí.

Tento román vyšel až po Verneově smrti, když jej přepracoval jeho syn Michel.Děj se odehrává ve dvou liniích. Tou první je cesta po Dunaji od pramene na jihozápadě Německa až po ústí do Černého moře v Rumunsku. Autor zde popisuje samotný tok řeky a řadu měst na ní ležících. Druhá linie je dobrodružná. Hlavním hrdinou vypravování je statečný bulharský vlastenec Sergej Ladko, který se vydává za maďarského rybáře Ilju Bruše, vítěze rybářské soutěže, a pluje lodí po řece do vlasti, kde se má postavit do čela připravovaného národního povstání proti Turkům. Podél toku Dunaje však řádí banda lupičů, jejímž vůdcem je Ivan Striga. Zločince se snaží odhalit rakouský policejní komisař Karol Dragoš.Zda se Ladkovi podaří vyvrátit Dragošovo podezření, že on je hledaným vůdcem lupičů, a podaří-li se lupiče dopadnout, to už čtenář zjistí z knihy samotné.
