To se však radikálně změnilo, když ve třiceti letech přinesl do redakce časopisu Home Chimes rukopis Tří mužů ve člunu. Časopisecký seriál se brzy proměnil v knihu, která se jen v Anglii do dnešních dnů dočkala stovky vydání a byla přeložena snad do všech světových jazyků. Zanedlouho se autor k postavám Jeroma, Harrise a George vrátil ve volném (a neméně úspěšném) pokračování Tři muži na toulkách. Otakar Brousek starší (1924–2014) Herce s vysoce kultivovaným hereckým projevem a nádherným podmanivým hlasem si pamatují celé generace diváků i posluchačů rozhlasových her a audioknih. V mládí hodně sportoval, hrál na housle a zajímal se o literaturu a divadlo. Ztvárnil více než 120 rolí klasického i současného divadelního repertoáru a za celoživotní mistrovství v činohře získal v roce 2004 cenu Thálie. Zahrál si přibližně ve 40 snímcích, například Andělská tvář, Můj brácha má prima bráchu či F. L. Věk. Daboval například George Cowleyho v britském seriálu Profesionálové nebo Albuse Brumbála ve filmové sérii Harry Potter.
