Naopak eseje se dočkaly vydání až mnohem později. Nový výbor je také osobním pohledem Josefa Mlejnka na Herbertovo dílo - některé básně již česky vyšly a nyní jsou publikovány v novém překladu. Zbigniew Herbert (1924-1998) byl významný polský básník a esejista, stal se symbolem protikomunistického odporu v Polsku a byl několikrát nominovaný na Nobelovu cenu. Svou první básnickou knihu Struna světla vydal v roce 1956, v roce 1974 vychází jeho kniha Pan Cogito, jejíž hlavní stejnojmenná postava se pak objevuje i v následujících Herbertových knihách. Poslední sbírka Epilog bouře byla vydána v roce jeho úmrtí. Je také autorem knižních reportážních esejů Barbar v zahradě (1962), na které navázaly soubory Zátiší s udidlem (1993) a Labyrint u moře (2000), v nichž reflektuje své časté cesty do zahraničí, kde pobýval řadu měsíců, někdy i let. Ačkoli v exilu nikdy natrvalo nezůstal, pobyt mimo Polsko pomáhal Herbertovi vyrovnat se s komunistickou totalitou, a zároveň promýšlet vztah k evropskému kulturnímu dědictví a tradici.
