Je autorem dlouhé řady textů - od románů ke slovníkům -, z nichž připomínáme alespoň Europeana. Stručné dějiny dvacátého věku. (Paseka 2001; 2002; 2006; Volvox Globator 2012), celoevropsky úspěšnou knihu, přeloženou do mnoha jazyků. Je tedy patrné, že Ouředníkova kulturní pozice je ojedinělá. Přinesl do Čech francouzský esprit, smysl pro subtilní ironii a jistý typ divokého a provokujícího (jarryovského) humoru, ale také vnutil francouzskému prostředí řadu témat, jež vyrostly z české půdy.
