Spejbl und Hurvínek hatten von Anfang an gute Voraussetzungen dazu. Sie sind aus gutem Behagen und guter Laune entstanden, aus der Sehnsucht nach Vermittlung der Freude und mit der ernsten Absicht, mit Hilfe von Puppen den Leuten einen krümmen Spisegel ihrer Tugend und Untugend entgegenzustellen. Nach den ersten Soloauftritten und Dialogen wurden sie allmählich Helden einer ganzen Serie von dramatischen Geschichten, Revuen, Schwänken mit Gesängen und Komödien. Das Theater Spejbl und Hurvínek, das sich als die erste moderne professionelle Puppenbühne in der Tschechoslowakei im Jahre 1930 konstituierte, hat bis heute über 160 Komödien, Revuen und Bühnenfolgen aufgeführt, in denen Spejbl und Hurvínek ganz alltägliche wie auch ausserordentlich phantastische Abenteuer erlebten. Schon in den dreissiger Jahren verbreitete sich ihre Popularität durch die Schallplatten; kühn und mutig sind sie vor die Film- und Fernsehkamera vorgetreten und ihre Geschichten sind für die Leser auch in Zeitschriften und Büchern erhalten. Bis heute trat das Theater Spejbl und Hurvínek in 25 Ländern von vier Kontinenten auf und seine Protagonisten sprachen fünfzehn Sprachen: ausser englisch, deutsch, russisch und frantösisch war es auch auf flämisch, arabisch und japanisch. Ausser Tschechoslowakei sind Spejbl und Hurvínek sehr beliebt vor allem im deutschsprachigen Gebiet. Das Theater spielt fast regelmässig in der BRD, DDR und Westberlin, und Spejbl und Hurvínek tretenb dort oft im Rundfunk und Fernsehen auf. Die ausserordentliche Sympathie, derr sich dort Spejbl und Hurvínek erfreuen, beweist auch die dritte Auflage ihrer Texte im Henschelverlog Berlin, deren Auswahl in Kürze die Dramaturgie der letzten zwanzig Jahre erfasst.
