Arnhem 1944 - Martin Middlebrook

Arnhem was meant to end the war in Europe. The Germans were in retreat from Normandy and seemed to be beaten. Three airborne divisions were to seize the bridges across the great rivers of Holland and unleash the Allied armies into Germany. The Battle of Arnhem was a turning-point in the war, a gamble by Montgomery, using three airborne divisions to capture a series of bridges across the wide rivers that separated a powerful mobile army from the plains of northern Germany. If the bridges had been captured and held, and the ground forces had been able to relieve the airborne forces, then there would have been a good chance of ending the war before Christmas 1944.It all went wrong. The initial operation was successful, the bridges taken by the Americans were relieved by ground troops, but these troops could not reach Arnhem quickly enough. In the meantime, only a small part of the 1st British Airborne Division had reached the Arnhem Bridge. Most of the remainder of the airborne force was held up on the outskirts of the town by German units that turned out to be far stronger than expected - a major intelligence failure. After nine days of fighting, the survivors of the division were withdrawn across the Rhine and it was not until many months later that ground forces captured Arnhem.Using the technique he has perfected over twenty-five years of military study, blending meticulous research based on original documents with the personal experiences of more than 500 participants, Martin Middlebrook describes the Battle of Arnhem from start to finish, from one end of that complicated battlefield to the other. The author offers a masterly summary of what went wrong in the last major defeat in battle suffered by the British Army.

A Street in Arnhem - Robert J Kershaw

Robert Kershaw follows-up his best-selling account of the Battle of Arnhem from German eyes - It Never Snows in September - to focus on the experiences of the Dutch civilians and British and German soldiers in one street, fighting to survive at the heart of one of the most intense battles of World War 2. A Street in Arnhem tells the story of the battle of Arnhem in September 1944 from the perspective of what could be seen or heard from the Utrechtseweg, a road that runs seven kilometres from Arnhem railway station west to Oosterbeek, and which saw virtually every major event during Operation Market-Garden played out in front of its inhabitants. The book charts the heartbreaking destruction of a well established, exclusive and popular rural community through the eyes of the British, Polish and German soldiers fighting amid the confused and horrified Dutch locals. It portrays a collage of human fears and emotions as ordinary people seek to cope when their street was so suddenly, and so savagely, overwhelmed in a mighty battle not of their making. Robert Kershaw''s new research reveals the extent to which most people in this battle, whether soldiers or civilians, saw only what was immediately happening to them and had virtually no idea of what was going on around them. Many original Dutch Dutch, German and English accounts have been unearthed through interviews, diary accounts and letters. Post combat reports have also been discovered charting the same incidents from both sides, as well as giving the Dutch civilian perspective. This gripping story is incredibly compelling and graphically portrays for readers the dramatic reality of having the street you have lived in peacefully for years engulfed in a major conflict.

Arnhem-Oosterbeek 1944 - Guus de Vries

ARNHEM-OOSTERBEEK 1944 Then and Now shows and tells the story of the most daring part of operation Market-Garden: the landing of the British 1st Airborne Division west of Arnhem to capture the bridges over the Rhine. The operation did not go according to plan and the British soon had to go on the defensive. After the area around the Arnhem road bridge had completely fallen into German hands, a six-day siege of the remnants of the airborne troops followed in a small area in Oosterbeek.

Sunday Post"A bombshell book." Daily Mail"Original, thought-provoking and exceedingly well written." Robert Kershaw"Sensational." Daily Express"Robert Verkaik''s best book yet, a testament to his investigative skills, journalistic nous for a compelling story, and impressive understanding of the spy world." Richard Kerbaj***The end of the Second World War is in sight.Following the overwhelming victory on D-Day, Churchill, Roosevelt and Stalin all seek to shape the global future to their own ends and win the race to Berlin. The British launch Operation Market Garden, the greatest airborne operation the world has ever seen. It is a bold roll of the dice, which, if successful, will end the war in weeks. But behind the scenes, spies are working, and plans are betrayed, the operation fails and thousands of Allied soldiers die.The Traitor of Arnhem tells a never-before-told story of this iconic operation, and of the very different figures working in secret to cause the catastrophic defeat. One traitor a terrifying giant of a man, a supposed hero of the resistance who sent hundreds of fellow freedom fighters to torture and death, the other an aristocrat and an English gentleman, working from inside the heart of the Allied war effort in London. Both of them working for the Russians.Drawn from unseen records and shedding fresh light on the operation and the spies responsible for its failure, this is an incredible account of the battle that would go on to shape the twentieth century.***"Breathtaking." Sunday Post"This history book serves as a powerful and timely reminder of how the failure to tackle Joseph Stalin''s threat to the West at the end of World War 2 has forced the free world to face up to the aggression of Vladimir Putin today." Bill Browder, author of Red Notice and Freezing Order"Excellent ... a remarkable answer through considerable research to the vexed question: why were the Nazis unexpectedly lying in wait?" The Jewish Chronicle"The strongest point of the book is the story about ''Josephine''. We will probably never be sure who ''Josephine'' was, if it even was a person, but... Robert proves the case as far as circumstantial evidence allows one." Bob de Graaff, Holland''s foremost expert on intelligence and the official historian of the Dutch intelligence services."I have not read such a convincing portrayal of the German intelligence war in Holland ... A worthwhile read." Robert Kershaw, author of It Never Snow In September

Arnhem's Last Para - John Humphreys, Stuart Tootal

A powerful and authentic account of one soldier's war from Tobruk to Arnhem and all points in between.John Humphreys was just a boy soldier in the Royal Engineers when war was declared in 1939. By the war's end he had jumped into Arnhem with the Parachute Regiment to spearhead the attack on the bridge. For days Humphreys and the rest of his squad held on, outnumbered and outgunned by the German army fighting to the last bullet and refusing to surrender. But the Bridge Too Far is only the climax of Humphreys’ remarkable war. Twice captured as a prisoner of war, he twice escaped from the enemy to make his way back to Allied lines in order to rejoin the fight.Aged 101, Humphreys began to pen his extraordinary story, with the help of bestselling author and former paratrooper Stuart Tootal. The Last Para is Humphrey’s parting gift, and the final time we will read an account from a soldier of our Greatest Generation bearing witness to the heroism and sacrifice of this legendary action – told with incredible honesty and irrepressible spirit.

Arnhem - Antony Beevor

THE SUNDAY TIMES #1 BESTSELLERThe great airborne battle for the bridges in 1944 by Britain''s Number One bestselling historian and author of the classic Stalingrad''Our greatest chronicler of the Second World War'' - Robert Fox, Evening Standard______________On 17 September 1944, General Kurt Student, the founder of Nazi Germany''s parachute forces, heard the growing roar of aeroplane engines. He went out on to his balcony above the flat landscape of southern Holland to watch the air armada of Dakotas and gliders carrying the British 1st Airborne and the American 101st and 82nd Airborne divisions. He gazed up in envy at this massive demonstration of paratroop power.Operation Market Garden, the plan to end the war by capturing the bridges leading to the Lower Rhine and beyond, was a bold concept: the Americans thought it unusually bold for Field Marshal Montgomery. But could it ever have worked? The cost of failure was horrendous, above all for the Dutch, who risked everything to help. German reprisals were pitiless and cruel, and lasted until the end of the war.The British fascination with heroic failure has clouded the story of Arnhem in myths. Antony Beevor, using often overlooked sources from Dutch, British, American, Polish and German archives, has reconstructed the terrible reality of the fighting, which General Student himself called ''The Last German Victory''. Yet this book, written in Beevor''s inimitable and gripping narrative style, is about much more than a single, dramatic battle. It looks into the very heart of war.______________''In Beevor''s hands, Arnhem becomes a study of national character'' - Ben Macintyre, The Times''Superb book, tirelessly researched and beautifully written'' - Saul David, Daily Telegraph''Complete mastery of both the story and the sources'' - Keith Lowe, Literary Review
