Succulents, especially cacti, are the current focus of serious ecological studies but also the darlings of designers and style influencers. Their endearing, characterful looks have given them the status of trendy ‘plant pets’. But succulentomania is not new. While these plants have always been part of the landscape in the dry vastnesses of the Americas, Australia and Africa, curiosities such as furry-flowered stapeliads and euphorbias like snakes were a source of fascination for early European plant collectors – and in eighteenth-century Bavaria a prosperous apothecary grew an ‘American aloe’ that astounded all who saw it. This apothecary, Johann Wilhelm Weinmann, was the mastermind behind a groundbreaking book in which he aimed to include thousands of plants from all over the world, describing their individual characteristics and commissioning magnificent colour illustrations of each specimen. The succulents he featured are reproduced here in all their splendour. Je tak zřejmé, že je zaměřen na osobu a funkci ,,soudce“, přičemž zde na základě evropské srovnávací studie dochází autoři ke specifikování vhodných kompetencí, které mají být zjišťovány a měřeny v průběhu výběru soudců na první pozici, jejich hodnocení a povyšování, a to jak na vyšší soudy, tak při ustavování do manažerských postů soudů. Ve formě barevné grafické tabulky v druhé části knihy pak autoři přehledně uvádí soubor kompetencí, které se používají v procesu jmenování, hodnocení a povyšování soudců, jakož i kritéria a metody, jak měřit tyto kompetence. Tento model byl konstruován jako flexibilní, přičemž barvy semaforu označují, jaké požadavky, kritéria a metody jsou považovány za ,,dobré mít“ (zelené), až k těm, které, pokud jde o naše odborníky, by součástí postupů výběru, hodnocení a povyšování soudců být neměly (červené). Realizace projektu ,,Portrét soudce“ také v širším kontextu vychází z četných záruk a aspektů nezávislosti soudnictví, zejména ve vztahu k výkonné moci, ale zohledňuje také postupný vliv judikatury na rozhodování soudů členských států Rady Evropy. Nezávislost soudnictví je jednou ze základních evropských hodnot, které vládnou právním státům a jejich ústavním systémům. Proto je tomuto problému věnována neustálá pozornost ve vědecké a pedagogické činnosti vysokých škol a výzkumných ústavů a samozřejmě i špičkových soudních institucí. I z tohoto důvodu je velmi cenná účast zástupců Nejvyššího soudu Litevské republiky, Vrchního soudu v Praze a Nejvyššího soudu Albánie, jakož i zástupců Nejvyšších rad soudnictví Litvy a Albánie. The publication summarizes the most important outputs from an international project organized by the University of Lithuania and implemented within the framework of the ,,Norway Grants” grant, which is simply described as ,,Portrait of a Judge”, but with the subtitle ,,A multidimensional model of competencies to be measured during the process of selection, evaluation and promotion of judges”. It is thus clear that it is focused on the person and function of the ,,judge”, and here, on the basis of a European comparative study, the authors specify appropriate competencies to be identified and measured during the selection, evaluation and promotion of judges in the first position, both to higher courts and when appointing to managerial positions of courts. In the form of a coloured graphical table in the second part of the book, the authors clearly present the set of competences that are used in the process of appointing, evaluating and promoting judges, as well as the criteria and methods for measuring these competences. This model has been designed to be flexible, with traffic light colours indicating which requirements, criteria and methods are considered 'good to have' (green), up to those which, as far as our experts are concerned, should not be part of the process of selecting, evaluating and promoting judges (red). The implementation of the ,,Portrait of a Judge” project also builds on numerous guarantees and aspects of judicial independence, in particular in relation to the executive, in a broader context, but also takes into account the gradual influence of case law on the decision-making of the courts of the member states of the Council of Europe. The independence of the judiciary is one of the fundamental European values that govern the rule of law and their constitutional systems. Therefore, constant attention is paid to this issue in the scientific and pedagogical activities of universities and research institutes and, of course, top judicial institutions. For this reason, the participation of representatives of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Lithuania, the High Court in Prague and the Supreme Court of Albania, as well as representatives of the Supreme Judicial Councils of Lithuania and Albania, is very valuable.

The third chapter is a brief history of the formulation of Prague’s historic urban landscape, particularly in the turbulent 20th century, and an outline of a possible solution for its further development based on the Metropolitan Plan. It describes how it is possible to supplement the historically layered city with a contemporary cultural layer precisely as assumed in the wording of the UNESCO inscription from 1992. The attempt of the book is to place today’s views of the city into a historical context. For this reason, in the first excursus, the book provides a selection of historic Prague vedute from the collection of the City of Prague Museum. In the second excursus, the book presents selection from the archival collections of IPR Praha with views of the design of the city from the 20th century.The main part of the book represents in the 3rd excursus series of new Prague vedute: the panoramic photographs taken from 2014 to 2017 as the artistic vision of Ester Havlová, capturing of a crucial historical moment in the search for a vision of the future of Prague. We can’t go on like this much longer, either morally or scientifically. The technology that was supposed to save us is ready to destroy us. Yet we’re not to wait in terror, because as Christians, we have the hope of the return of Christ. When is he going to return? Jesus said, “Concerning that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only” (Matthew 24:36).NOAH BELIEVED IN GOD, AND TRUE FAITH DETERMINED HOW HE LIVED. Without God’s Spirit coming to live within us we don’t have the strength to change and live a life that pleases God. That’s why we need to be saved! Repentance means that you say to God, “I have sinned. I am sorry for my sins. I want to change my way of living by your empowerment.”Second, you come to God by faith. That means that you put your whole trust in him and say, “Lord, I believe Christ’s death for me provides everything I need to be forgiven for my sins and become accepted by you. I trust in Jesus alone for my salvation. Please save me now and help me live for you.”You may be a good person. You may do all the good that you can think of, but all of that isn’t enough. But even this recognition has not been without significant dissenting voices. Among these is the Abbot of the renowned Kykkos monastery in Cyprus, Metropolitan Nikiforos. In this pithy text he eloquently explains why the actions of the Ecumenical Patriarchate have created a schism in the Orthodox Church worldwide and how in turn they reflect the promotion of a new ecclesiology that distorts the traditional understanding of the Orthodox Church as headed only by Christ Himself. He is clear that the only road to healing and unending schism is a return to a form of inter-Orthodox relations which respects both conciliarity and hierarchy. An analysis of the methods of Solomonic magic from the 7th to the 19th century as found in the Hygromanteia and Key of Solomon. This volume is about the methods of magic used in 7th century Egyptian Alexandria and how they have been passed via the Greek grimoires of Byzantium (the Hygromanteia), to the manuscripts of the Latin Clavicula Salomonis and its English incarnation as the Key of Solomon. Jewish techniques like the use of pentacles, oil and water skrying were added along the way, but Solomonic magic (despite its name) remained basically a classical Greek form of magic. Amazingly, this transmission has involved very few changes: the ''technology'' of magic has remained firmly intact. The emphasis is upon specific magical techniques such as the invocation of the gods, the binding of demons, the use of the four demon Kings, the construction of a circle and lamen (for protection of the magician). The requirements of purity, sexual abstinence, and fasting have changed little in the last 2000 years. The concrete reasons for that are explained. The difference between amulets, talismans and phylacteries or lamens is outlined along with their methods of construction. Examples of magical circles have been taken from many sources and their construction and development traced out. Practical considerations such as choice of incense, the timing of the cutting of the wand, utilisation of rings and statues, use of the Table of Evocation, or the acquisition of a familiar spirit are explained. The structure of a Solomonic evocation puts into perspective the reasons for each step, the use of thwarting angels, achieving invisibility, sacrifice, love magic, treasure finding, and the binding, imprisoning and licensing of spirits. The facing directions and timing of evocations have always been crucial, and these too have remained consistent. By examining the way these same methods were used again and again in the various periods, minor omissions in magical practice can be observed and repaired. This book is thus a follow-on from Techniques of Graeco-Egyptian Magic. This volume investigates precise methods used by magicians from the magicians'' own handbooks rather than from the opinions of theologians, historians, anthropologists or legislators. The emphasis is on what magicians did and why. Tools used by magicians in 7th century Alexandria, 15th century Constantinople and 19th century London are very much the same. Detailed comparisons are made chapter by chapter with 70 illustrations of magical equipment like the wand, the sword, wax and clay images and magical gems, drawn from a wide range of manuscripts and reproduced with detailed analysis. Vademecum of International law, as the label of this textbook indicates, is a brief handbook of public international law. The objective of this textbook is to provide its readers with a coherent introduction into the study of public international law. This textbook therefore explains the main concepts and institutions of public international law. In doing so, where appropriate, the text takes into consideration historic origins and development of the respective institutions of public international law, as well as the historic development of public international law as a whole. This textbook also deliberately includes extensive quotations of both primary texts (such as court decisions or texts of international treaties) as well as thoughts of influential writers in the respective fields of public international law. The resort to extensive quotations should provide the reader with first hand resources without the (always subjective) deformation of the respective source via paraphrasing. This textbook is not intended to serve as an all-encompassing textbook or encyclopedia. After all, for that it would be too short in the first place. The objective here is to provide the reader with a basic introduction into the key areas of public international law, foundations upon which one can built further study. The reason is that this book is primarily intended as a main textbook for a one semester course called Introduction to Public International Law taught at the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen and frequented primarily by Erasmus exchange students for whom English is in most cases a foreign language. In doing so, this textbook leaves out certain areas of public international law that ought to be read elsewhere, inter alia: material maritime law, international criminal law, space law, aviation law, international environmental law, and human rights law. Other areas are discussed in volume and depth appropriate to a one semester course in a qualifying law degree program.
